Agent Vaughn put the receiver of his telephone back into the cradle and
stood up from his desk to go find Kendall.
"Agent Kendall, I just received a phone call, Marshall Flinkman from
SD-6 never arrived at our extraction point."
"Where is he?"
"We don't know, sir. Agent Bristow hasn't returned from SD-6 yet.
It's not safe to call her."
"Thank you, Agent Vaughn."
Vaughn went back to his desk, and found himself dialing a familiar
number.
"Will? This is Vaughn."
"Oh, hey. What's up?"
"Sydney hasn't come home yet, has she?"
"Nope. I haven't seen her."
"Okay, thanks."
He hung up the phone. What am I supposed to do now? he thought, I
can't start looking for this guy until I hear from Syd. After about half
an hour she came into the office. Vaughn got up to approach her about
Marshall.
"Did Marshall get back to SD-6?"
"Well, hello to you too. What do you mean did he come back to SD-6,
he's supposed to be with you."
"I know, but his car never came to the extraction point."
"Whoa, wait, if he's not here and obviously not at SD-6. Then where
is he?"
"Iwas hoping you could answer that question. Kendall wants a list of
people, or organizations who would have interest in abducting Marshall.
Either because of the Echelon program, or other information he may have
about SD-6."
"My God, it could be just about anyone, but Sloane didn't mention
anyone in the meeting earlier."
"Syd, we have to work fast. We need to get to him first."
"Iknow that. But what are we supposed to do? We have absolutely no
information. I was in a separate car, we took different routes, the last
time I saw him was at the airport."
"Was there anyone at the opera house in London that looked
suspicious, or could have seen you leave, anything?"
"Anyone could have seen us, Vaughn! (pause) This is my fault; I had
the chance to go with him in the car. I should have."
"Sydney, don't say that. If you had done that, I'd be looking for
both of you right now, and I would have even less to work off of."
"I don't know, Vaughn. It's just something that Marshall said to
me just before we left the airport. It's been kind of eating away at
me. He said he couldn't believe how rewarding it was to know that you
were doing good for your country and that he was proud to be working
for the good guys. It almost killed me to have to send him off to
find out that everything he believed everything he thought he had been
working to protect was a lie. And that he truly wasn't a good guy at all."
"Syd, it's not your fault, none of it. He was bound to find out
eventually, and when we find him we'll continue as planned, and we'll
give him a chance to actually work for the good guys. If we find him."
Vaughn held out his hand and pulled Sydney into him and he held her
tightly.
"We will find him Sydney, I promise." he whispered into her ear.
She pulled away slightly, and said, "Okay, let's get started."
